Communication and presentation coaching
Use recorded rehearsals to discuss visible movement without turning a coaching session into a personality verdict.
Buyer
Presentation coaches, learning platforms, and customer-success enablement teams.
Consented input
A participant's consented rehearsal or role-play recording, with a separately defined review rubric.
API role
Surface time-coded facial-expression signals for a coach and speaker to review in context.
Human review and action
A coach watches the source, asks the participant what they intended, and discusses a possible practice action.
Business value
Evaluate whether the reference moments support a more specific discussion, without assuming better performance.
Proof and validation
Compare reviewer agreement, usefulness of located moments, and participant feedback against your stated purpose.
Implementation path
- State the coaching purpose and participant notice
- Capture a consented rehearsal
- Revisit time-coded moments together
- Discuss possible practice actions with participant context
Explicit boundaries
- Scoring confidence or authenticity
- Hiring or promotion
- Claiming engagement or intent
All workflows Integration readinessBefore you start
Write down the purpose, the people involved, and the question a reviewer will answer. Obtain appropriate consent before recording or processing media. Decide who can access footage and when your team will delete it. These are responsibilities to plan, not a claim that the API supplies a consent or retention system.
Keep the proposed use separate from judging a person's feelings, health, or suitability. For workplace and educational contexts, consider EU AI Act Article 5(1)(f). It prohibits emotion-inference AI there, except for medical or safety reasons, from February 2, 2025. Talk to counsel about your use case. This is not legal advice.
Example review loop
Invite the speaker to choose a consented rehearsal for review. Locate a time-coded expression signal, then watch the surrounding passage together. Ask what the speaker intended instead of supplying an emotional explanation. A visible change may prompt a useful question, but it does not establish confidence, sincerity, or engagement.
If the participant wants another practice attempt, agree on a specific communication task in their own words. Compare the relevant recordings using that task, not an emotional ranking. Treat the person's account as context rather than a score to be corrected by software. Keep participation separate from employment decisions.
How to measure whether it helps
Reserve held-out clips before changing the review protocol. Ask independent reviewers to apply the same written codebook, then inspect disagreements. Noldus The Observer XT supports inter-rater reliability using Cohen's kappa. BORIS is a free, open-source event-logging tool for video, audio, and live observation. These are separate tools, not built-in Mental Edge integrations.
Choose agreement criteria before seeing results, and retain an uncertain or unusable category. Record whether reviewers locate useful moments without mistaking agreement for emotional truth. Report failures alongside useful observations. This is a suggested evaluation loop, not a claim of measured improvement.
What it is not for
Barrett and colleagues describe why expressions should not be read as a person's emotion from the face alone. Keep the explicit boundaries above throughout your proposed implementation. The workflow is not for hiring, promotion, diagnosis, deception detection, threat assessment, student scoring, or surveillance.
